My poet was Shel Silverstein, and he was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1930. Shel Silverstein was a song writing musician, author, and an illustrator. He spent his early life serving in the U.S. Army during 1950. He was a cartoonist for many different magazines, and when he joined Playboy, his work became national known. During his time at Playboy he started his career of writing poems and songs. Some of his best known works were The Giving Tree, Lafcadio: The Lion Who shot Back, A Giraffe and a Half, The Missing Piece, and The Missing Piece Meets the Big O. He won a Grammy Award for his song “A Boy Named Sue”, and he was an Oscar-nominated songwriter.
The books that Shel Silverstein made with illustrations were characterized to be very sly, serious, horrifying, or silly, and each characterization varied based on which novel you were reading. Shel Silverstein’s first few books were sad yet humorous making his audience laugh. He called himself Uncle Shelby when he read these books to children. During his time serving the army, Shel Silverstein wrote his first few books based on what it was like to be in the army. When he finally worked with Playboy (mention earlier), he started getting his work to be more recognized drawing pictures, and writing many interesting story’s that were funny. After Shel became a musician, composing some hit country songs, He final official started his career of being a poem writer. His books were loved by people of all ages, and one of his hit books showed the true meaning of friendship. Many of his books were about how bonds between things can last a life time, and they were very silly making people enjoy his work. These types of books became international famous all around the world by many children and parents.
Many things impacted Shel Silverstein’s writing life. When he was young he dreamed to be a good baseball player, so that he can be popular with the girls. But when he tried to play baseball he was very bad, and no girls wanted to be with him. Because of that incident, Shel Silverstein started his career in writing, and illustrating pictures. By the time the girls were interested in him, Shel was more interested in his writing. Later when Shel Silverstein was sent to Korea to serve for the U.S. army, his time there impacted his first book which was about his time in the army. My poet also didn’t really read or know about any other writers during his time, so he developed his own style of writing which was a big hit. Not many things came into play besides his service time with the U.S. army in his adulthood.
During his service time in the U.S. army, he worked for the newspaper company called Pacific Stars and Stripes, and that was where he started his illustrating. After that, When he work for Playboy for 20 years, that could have been the foundation to his later works because during the time he served there he wrote many funny stories, and his job was to be a cartoonist. Other than this nothing really came into effect in Shel Silverstein’s writing because he developed his own style of writing.
Shel Silverstein was an illustrator, a country songwriter, an author, and a poet. During Shel Silverstein’s later years he continued to make memorable pieces such as the poem Where the Sidewalk Ends which came out in the 1970s. He made many big hits such as the A Light in the Attic, The Missing Piece, etc. before he died on May 10, 1999 due to heart failure in Key West, Florida. Shel Silverstein is still celebrated today for his silly and sad pieces that he has written. He was best known for his children’s book that he wrote called The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends. Shel Silverstein has done many things throughout his life, and he truly is a Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated writer, poet, play writer, and many other things that he has done and accomplished.
